Since Repeal, not a great many entirely new breweries have been built, and of
those not all have reached the point of successfully merchandising their products. Latest
to dig into their own pockets and also to offer stock to residents of Michigan for the
financing of construction and operation of a brand new brewery are Ben A. Koppitz and Fred
P. Goettman. Both of these men are experienced brewers, having been associated with the
original Koppitz-Melchers Brewing Company of Detroit. Their plans are carefully laid and
the brewing industry will watch with interest the future of Koppitz-Melchers, Inc. This
article deals with the history of the original brewery and the organization of the new
company. It is made possible through the cooperation of the officers and directors
of Koppitz-Melchers, Inc. |
| For some months news items have appeared covering the plans
of Koppitz-Melchers, Inc. to build a modern brewery in Detroit. Construction is now well
under way and it is expected that operation of the new plant will start in July,
according- to Ben A. Koppitz, president of the company. Koppitz-Melchers, Inc. has a
true brewing background and the name is well known to old time beer drinkers of Detroit.
In 1890 Konrad E. Koppitz, who had been superintendent of the Stroh Brewery, and Arthur C.
Melchers, who was cashier of the same firm, together with Charles F. Zielke and |
Herman
Sachse founded the original Koppitz-Melchers Brewing Company. A book entitled
"Detroit-Illustrated" was published in 1891 and it is interesting to read what
was said at that time about the brewery. It shows by comparison with the organization
set-up of today that the same traditions and principles upon which the brewery was founded
are being rigidly adhered to by the new company.
